Free Yoga for VEts

Our Post now offers weekly “Warrior Yoga” classes that are free for all Veterans, Active Duty, 1st Responders and their families.

These classes are are designed specifically to meet the needs of members of the military and the Veteran community and integrate evidence-based and trauma-informed protocols to help regulate the nervous system and to train the body and mind to become more resilient in face of stress and challenge.

Class meets weekly every Sunday morning (follow link below for details) and are provided by local nonprofit Warrior Within Yoga Project.

Visit their website for class times and to register in advance.

During the warmer months we take class outside; the rest of the year or in inclement weather, class is held in the upstairs hall accessible by ramp.

The Details

Who is this yoga class for?

  • Veterans of any age. Our class is a multi-generational group, with Veterans anywhere between 22-98 years old joining us.

  • Those with limited flexibility or mobility. This is an adaptive class so that truly anyone can join. Flexibility is not a requirement; you won’t be asked to twist yourself into a pretzel.

  • Those practicing with or without a prosthetic limb. Again, as an adaptive class we are equipped with both the knowledge and the gear needed so that anyone can fully participate in the yoga session.

  • Those who have experienced a traumatic brain injury. Warriors At Ease teachers are trained to understand some of the side effects and any of the contraindications of TBIs. Evidence-based techniques are used to support brain health.

  • Family members of and caretakers of Veterans & Service Members. We know that family members and caretakers take on many responsibilities of their own. If you feel like you would benefit from our class, you are encouraged to join us, with or without your Veteran.

What do I need to bring/know before class?

  • If this is your very first yoga class, please know you are in good company. For many of the Veterans in this group, their first time trying yoga was with this group.

  • All the essential gear (like a yoga mat) you would need is provided. If you do have a yoga mat of your own, we encourage you to bring it.

  • Bring water

  • Wear comfortable clothes suited for movement. In cooler weather, having an extra layer to remove or add is helpful.

  • It’s customary to see people practicing yoga barefoot from maximum grip and stability. We encourage you to remove your shoes to practice. If you happen to have a pair of socks that have grips on the sole, those are great as well.
